Are you are fulltime carer?
Maybe, rather than describing yourself as a carer, you see your role of supporting a family member or friend as an important part of your own everyday life.
However you describe yourself, taking time to look after yourself is an important part of being able to care for someone else, even if you don’t feel you need it.
ECH has an extensive range of classes and services that they can provide to enable you to take some time out for yourself.
There are exercise classes, held at the ECH Wellness Centres where you can socialise with others while you maintain or improve your fitness. Or, if you prefer to exercise alone, you can make use of the gyms also located at the Wellness Centres.
If you would like some time to unwind, ECH offers Tai Chi programs and remedial massage.
Professional allied health therapists are also available, including physiotherapists, podiatrists and dietitians, who can provide you with advice and support in looking after yourself and also in regards to caring for another person.
ECH also offers respite via our day programs. ECH Day Program centres are located at Smithfield, Walkerville, Happy Valley and Victor Harbor, and there are also both day and evening programs at Henley Beach. These programs enable the person you care for to engage in a social, homelike environment or go on an outing with all the support that is needed while you take a short break to perhaps go to an exercise class, spend some time with friends, or spend some time on your own.
If you need a longer break, perhaps to take a holiday or go out for an evening, ECH has an Overnight Respite Centre at Henley Beach, which has been designed to specifically meet the needs of people experiencing dementia or memory loss and also offers a Carer Support Group to provide peer-to-peer support. Or if you prefer, ECH can arrange for someone to provide respite in your home.
If you would like a little extra help to keep up with chores around your home or garden so that you can focus on the person you care for, then ECH has housekeeping, nursing, and home and garden maintenance services available.
No matter your age, ECH services are available to you on a competitive fee for service basis. If you have private health insurance you may be able to seek rebates from your provider, or if you are aged 65 years or over, you may qualify for the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).
If the person you care for if over 65, they may qualify for a Home Care Package (HCP). You may be able to use some of this funding to access centre based respite, in-home respite and/or other ECH services.
Finding your way through all the available options for your own wellbeing and lifestyle needs, as well as the funding and subsidies available to you, can be challenging. If you are not sure what the options are for you and the person you care for, or you would like to find out more about ECH services, email firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 1300 275 324 for a free, no-obligation chat.
