Being able to communicate with other people is a fundamental human need. Communication allows you to express your needs and wants, to share your thoughts and to understand others, and to allow you to chat with friends and family.
When something interferes with your ability to communicate as you usually do, you might feel distressed, frustrated or even humiliated.
If you are experiencing difficulties communicating, perhaps due to a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, neurological disorder or other medical condition, you may benefit from the specialist services of an accredited speech pathologist.
You can access the services of a speech pathologist at one of ECH’s fully air-conditioned Wellness Centres, located at Henley Beach, Greenacres and Morphett Vale. Your consultation with your speech pathologist will be in a completely private setting. If you prefer, your speech pathologist can visit you and conduct a consultation in the comfort of your own home. You do not need a referral from your doctor to access the services of an ECH speech pathologist.
Perhaps you are finding it difficult to articulate speech sounds (Dysarthria), or understand the spoken word (Aphasia), or you are having chewing and swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia).
During your initial consultation your speech pathologist will conduct a full assessment of your speech disorder and then work with you to develop an evidence based treatment plan. Your goals to improve your language abilities and/or swallowing difficulties will be identified, and your speech pathologist will work with you to achieve them.
No matter your age, ECH speech pathology services are available to you on a competitive fee for service basis. If you have private health insurance you may be able to seek rebates from your provider, or if you are aged 65 years or over, you may qualify for the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).
