Are you recovering from an accident or a major health issue such as a heart attack or cancer? Do you want to improve your heart health or increase control over your diabetes? Are you looking to improve and maintain your current level of fitness and health? Perhaps you would like to know more about injury prevention?

Wherever you are on your journey to health, an ECH exercise physiologist may be what you are looking for. Exercise physiologists assist people to reach their full potential.  This can be training for Masters Sports or participating in a local club or simply exercising with other people who are perhaps a bit younger or healthier.

Chronic health management

Exercise physiologists assist with chronic disease management for a range of health issues including osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, diabetes, mental health, some cancers, lower back pain and chronic pain and fatigue. They use modalities such as rehabilitation after surgery (especially for ACL reconstruction and knee or hip replacement), neuromuscular exercise therapy for conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease, and disease prevention strategies for conditions such as cognitive decline.

You can access the services of an Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) accredited exercise physiologist at one of ECH’s fully air-conditioned Wellness Centres located at Henley Beach, Greenacres, Morphett Vale and Victor Harbor.

What to expect in your initial consultation

During your initial consultation, your exercise physiologist will seek to understand your goals and current physical condition, as well as assess the impact of any current medical conditions on your lifestyle and health. An exercise program will then be developed which will take into account your goals, your lifestyle and your general health. Your care plan will be tailored to you to make it as achievable and enjoyable as possible, and will be based on strategies that have been proven to increase both range of motion and strength.

Your personalised fitness program

Your fitness exercise program may include exercise classes such as Pilates, circuit training or core strength. You may have individual workout plans for home exercise developed for you, or an exercise routine that has been specifically designed for you which is gym-based. Exercise physiologists work closely with other allied health professionals to ensure that any gym-based programs or other physical programs are supervised to ensure your safety and to provide the best possible outcomes for you.

Your exercise physiologist can provide you with professional guidance and advice on making lifestyle and exercise modifications so that your level of health can stay as high as possible.

If required, your ECH exercise physiologist can also work closely with your general practitioner and any of your other health practitioners to make sure your care plan is fully integrated and meets all of your health goals.
