Being unable to complete daily activities independently can be challenging and frustrating. ECH Occupational Therapists help people to regain their independence, so whether you want to take a shower, cook a meal or get out and about on your own, they can help.

How can an ECH Occupational Therapist help?

Medical conditions, hearing or vision changes, memory changes or any natural course of ageing can make tasks you found easy, now feel challenging. An ECH Occupational Therapist will work with you to understand your concerns, current physical ability and what you would like to achieve.

They can also help you to make adjustments so you can remain independent in your own home.

Your goals could include any number of tasks you want help with, both in and out of your home, such as:

  • showering independently
  • cooking a meal
  • getting in and out of bed
  • choosing and learning how to use a mobility device so you can go to the shops
  • walking around and enjoying your garden safely
  • getting up and down steps
  • hanging out the washing

ECH Occupational Therapists can also work to support the carers and families of clients. Common goals could include:

  • being able to help someone get in or out of the car
  • making it safe for a person to get in and out of their home
  • learning how to communicate effectively with someone with dementia
  • strategies for helping someone with dementia complete basic tasks

Each plan is personal, so your goals may vary from the ones here, these are a guide to show how Occupational Therapists can help across a range of areas.

Our Occupational Therapists will work with you to create a personalised plan to achieve your goals which will enable you to feel more confident about your abilities and more secure in your environment.

They may recommend simple adjustments to your home such as installing handrails or a ramp or rearranging furniture to minimise the risk of bumps and falls.

You may also be shown exercises and skills to make daily tasks like dressing yourself simpler or be introduced to occupational therapy equipment or assistive technology that can make tasks easier.

Our Occupational Therapists can also work closely with your GP and any of your other health practitioners where required to make sure your care plan is integrated with any other care you are receiving.

Helping Don stay in his beachfront home

Having lived in his scenic beachfront home for 31 years, Don wasn’t ready to leave when he started using a walker and looked to ECH to help him remain living confidently at home.

With the help of an ECH Occupational Therapist Don has achieved his goal of being able to move around his home safely using his walker.

Our Occupational Therapist helped Don make changes to his home that included installing handrails, decluttering walkways and relocating the bathroom vanity so that he could safely fit his walker.

“I feel like I have a new lease on life! I feel more independent and can move safely around my home now that the walkways are opened up. All of the ECH staff have been so wonderful.”
