In this 8-week facilitated program you will learn how to present and document your life in a fresh, insightful, and authentic way for for future generations to discover.

21 February – Introduction to memoir
What is memoir? We will discuss different kinds of memoir, look at some examples, and explore our reasons for writing about our life.
28 February – Find your focus
What do you really want to write about, and why? Choosing the subject, theme or story of your memoir.
6 March – Know your material: research and reflect
Two strategies for gathering material to write a compelling memoir Gather information from various sources; activate your memory.
13 March – Craft a compelling narrative
Create a captivating opening: set the tone for your story. Invite readers into your world using sensory detail.
20 March – Structure your story
Structure gives your readers the sense that your writing has purpose and will take them somewhere. Learn how to choose what to include, what to leave out, and to organise your narrative.
27 March – Bring characters to life
Who are the main characters in your story? What kind of character are you? Explore using action, dialogue and stories to enliven your writing.
3 April – Plot the narrative
Plot shapes a story so it makes sense to our brains, to give it meaning.  Identify the turning points of your story and experiment with ways to sequence them.
10 April – Find your writer’s voice
What does it mean to find your unique voice as a writer? Technical aspects: form, tone, tense, and point of view.
